Running Hot
« on: July 26, 2014, 12:03:56 PM »
So that day we went to Grey Eagle Casino for the wednesday show the day's temp went up to 35 degrees.  Was a pretty warm day for Calgary and in the stop and go traffic on the way there my engine temps climbed up to 230.  This could be compounded by the fact I have a new engine with under 1000kms on it, however I decided to make a couple of changes to combat this from happening in the future.

What I'm currently running;
- 50/50 water/coolant
- Water Wetter
- FRPP 3 core aluminum radiator
- Edlebrock high flow water pump
- Underdrive Main pulley
- Stock 5.0 water pump pulley

Changes I've decided on...

On order;
- ASP Cobra R aluminum water pump pulley
- Cobra R front grille opening

The original Cobra R water pump pulley is a hard to find part (F3ZE-8509-AA), fortunately ASP makes aluminum reproduction pulleys.  This is a smaller than stock diameter pulley that Ford fitted onto the '93 Cobra R for increased coolant flow.

I liked having the look of the smooth OEM GT bumper cover with no opening.  However, another change Ford made with the '93 Cobra R was to open that up, so I think this new engine will be better off to have some added air flow with the Cobra R grille opening.

Changed water pump pulley to a Cobra R. Strap wrench comes in handy to do this. Just happened to have a belt size down to install a new belt afterwards. This also solved my clearance problem between the tensioner and belt...

Shot of the new Cobra R pulley. 4 inches in diameter compared to the stock one at 4 1/2 inches. This should drive the water pump a little better...

Cobra R grille opening. This will be a spring/summer project for next year. Maybe trim the opening a bit bigger, have to see....

Very interested in this. I'd like to open the front grill up as well to get more cool air in and that grill looks good.
